The Food and Drug Administration says it's using a different brand of the drug to make Viagra more readily available in the United States, but it says the new drug will not make it more widely available. In theory, though, this would make it more widely available, especially at low drug prices.
But the agency doesn't want to say how much it will pay for Viagra, which has been sold for as little as $4 a pill.
"There is no price to cover it," said John Hirsch, a professor at Harvard Medical School who's studying how the drug works in the United States, or that the drug will have to be sold for as much as $8.95 a pill.
Viagra will be available only through a doctor, not an FDA-approved drug. But the drug will be made by Pfizer, which manufactures Viagra, and it's not clear how much it will cost for consumers, said Hirsch, who is also a professor at the University of Southern California.
